This is My Presentation on Victorian Circus Vs Modern Circus

My peers have said that our presentation needed to have bigger writing and more information however we presented clearly and, it included good animations.
What is Circus? :

Research Towards My Circus Project

Desigual Cirque du Soleil:
This deisgn I like the most as it is bright and colourful which are the aspects of a circus. I like it aswell because the outfits are innocent and sweet and this contradicts what a clown is which is scary and playful. I also like the way balloons and rings have been included which are in a circus.

Elsa schiaparelli Circus Collection:
I like this collection as it is classy, and she has also made something so wacky and crazy able to wear on the highstreet. I also like the rough and vintage textile print of the horses on the garment .

Galliano Circus Collection 1997:
This is my 3rd favourite as it is really wacky and over the top. It has bursts of colour and lots of texture which makes it more interesting to observe. This particular deisgn reminds me of flowers as the splash of colour coming from the centre reminds me of petals on a flower.

Bauhaus Triadic Ballet:
Lastly this is my least favourite deisgn as it is over the top and dull. It does not really show me that it is circus based however it shows a sense of strange and weird and unique style to it, just like what circus's are.

This is my Feedback on my first project.
Peer assessment:
Three points where you have been successful are :
  • Colour pallette / Presentation
  • Mood board
  • Final garment
Two points I think you could develop and extend are :
  • Need to work on samples
  • Do more samples
A question for you is...
  • Would you change anything?
My peer assessment I do agree with as my presentation and colour pallette was good and consistant. However I am weak when it comes to working with fabrics and creating garments or in this case samples towards my final garments. I also need to do more appropriate samples that I will include within my final design.

My final garment is in fashion as shops like ASOS and TopShop sell skater style dresses. I have used the browns and oranges and skin colours as it is autumn and these colours are in fashion during the autumn season.

Make do and mend VS Punk

Punk fashion started in the 1970's, but became huge in the 80's. This outrageous and offensive style was so popular Vivienne Westwood styled her clothes off of it. Punks were daring rebels, who wore alot of black and tartan and styled them further by wearing piercings and saftey pins and tore their jeans. This was to make a statement. Being nonconformist was the attitude to have.
Make do and mend started during the second world war. It became a lifestyle for women. Making clothes from bed sheets to lining your tights with gravy was just all part of make do and mend. Simple pearls where used instead of the flashy jewellery usually worn, as everything you could give was given to the war cause. Make do and mend was hugely military inspired, so mens old trousers or blazers or shirts were usually tailored or were embelished with the buttons you would see on a military jacket.
In my opinion make do and mend is more interesting and far more classy. It intrigues me to found out how women managed to get by on so little during the war and still look so classy.

What is a flat illustration ?

A flat illustration is a garment or garments drawing that is not on a model, close ups of the garment can be included on aswell as materials and colours you will be using.

What is upcycling?

Up-cycling is another word for re inventing. Re inventing something could be seen as modernising the item. You can up cycle anything from a dress to a cushion etc...
Five examples of up cycling:
Textile print: Add a print such as a pattern or lettering or images to a garment etc...
Sewing: Sew into your chosen garment etc.. sew anything from wavy lines to lettering.
Embelishment: Add beading, studs, buttons to make it more interesting.
Pockets: Add a specific style of pocket to your garment and make it more pratical.
Pleats: Adding pleats into a garment or adding pleats to a garment can be very flattering for your body shape.
Shops up-cycle to appeal to a specific audience.
Asos, Primark, Afflecks are examples of shops that up-cycle

What Is A Moddboard ?

A mood-board is a collection of images ,text and fabrics all for a particular theme or phrase or from a particular decade.
Mood boards include images that you find appropriate towards the theme set for your mood board. They also include text that you may find useful towards helping you with you final design. Another medium to include is fabrics, less is more so a colour palette of about 4-5 can avoid getting confused with to many colours and fabrics.
Annotations are critical as they tell the observer what you are thinking throughout your mood board.
Pretty nostalgic
The word pretty implies beauty in almost an innocent way, the word nostalgic gives a sense of unique and vintage feel to it, which over all reminds me of Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe ,a Hollywood glamour look with a slight modernised feel to it aswell as ,during the 1940's women became more independent making their own clothes during the war. Which links back to the word nostalgic being vintage and unique.

           Shop Report
Three shops that sell customised clothing:
  • Asos
  • Topshop
  • Junk shop
Garments:
A gathered pleated skirt was in fashion during the 1930s, they gave women more shape. The buttoned down centre was military inspired as that is what the soldiers wore. This garment is made from silk. What makes this garment a customised piece of vintage clothing is that it is a plain black silk skirt embellished with buttons inspired from the 1930s.
£55.00- Topshop

A buttoned up blouse inspired from the 1930s-40s. This is a crowded silk blouse with images like; pocket watches and clocks and text that were common during the 1930s-40s. What makes this garment a customised piece of vintage clothing is that it has images that were common in the 1930s-40s.
£28.00-Junk Shop

 A kharki green skater dress.
  • Made from an easy-care poly fabric
  • Round collared neckline
  • Zip fastening to back
  • The colour kharki would have been commonly seen during the 1940s as during the war, women often wore modest clothes with dark colours that were seen as rough and rustic. This would be seen as customised vintage clothing because it is 1940s inspired with a modernised twist to it.

    £35.00-Asos
This is a polka dotted silk dress that was briefly seen during the 1920s-30s but re-seen during the 1950s. During the 1950s rockabilly came out and the polka dots were seen as an innocent rock style. This dress would be seen as vintage clothing as it is rockabilly,

                   Final Garment

This is my photo shoot for my final design
I have demonstrated a range of techniques from gathering to pleats to bonderweb and embelishment. I like my final garment as it came out just how I wanted, and i have demonstrated I can not only use a range of techniques but I can use them without using a domestic or an industrial machine.

Step by step towards my final garment.

This is my original moodboard of which I decided my decade, and looked more into the theme and aspects of it. Here I have included fabrics and colours that I have taken from my images, from my research. I found patterns such as lace and polka dots. Then I have chosen colours ranging from the Hollywood glamour red to the modest colours such as burgondys and creams and browns. With my colour palette I was able to include these colours when I started my sampling. I like this moodboard as I have used to contradicting themes; Hollywood glamour and Make do and mend, during the 1930s-40s and made them work. As for an improvement I need to look at more shapes and less garments for my moodboard to inspire my samples more.

This is a my style board I looked at the 'make do and mend' side of women during the 1930s-1940s. I refined my research and looked at make do and mend garments that occured throughout 1930s and 40s. Here I have looked at more patterns and embelishment that I planned to use on my final garment. Such as the bow and the bottoned up military inspired dress and skirt. I like this style board as I was able to refine my theme more and look at colours and fabrics and patters and look at what was commonly used bows and feathers on brouches such as ostrich and peacock. I really think it is appropriate and demonstrates the make do and mend theme as well as Hollywood glamour.
As for an improvement, I need to look at one theme maybe and concentrate on one more to acheive the perfect look and demonstration of my chosen decade.

These are samples that I have taken from my mood board and style board. For example the cream gathered fabric and pleat I intend to include within my final garment. The hand sewn buttons (embelishment) I planned to also include in my final garment as buttons during ww2 were a common embelihsment, and mainly military inspired with the one button at the top or the flowing left handed button lining. The pocket sample was an idea I was torn whether to include this in my final garment as I thought it would be to crowded. I wanted to achieve the simple look as women during the war, threw away all the glits and glam and used simple pearls and modest clothes. I like my samples as they demonstrate techniques that were used during this decade. However my pocket was poorly machine embroided as the fabric I used stretched easily and was hard to work with. If I was to do this again I would use less embelishment and more techniques such as pleats or gathering as they worked well.

These are my flat illustrations. For this I referred to my mood board and style board alot for inspiration. I decided to keep the same striped nautical pattern for each dress as it reminded me of a more pratical age for women. I really wanted to show how women during the 30s-40s designed their clothes,(mainly military inspired). The striped nautical pattern also reminded me of the sailor look that came to light during the 1930s. I like my flat illustrations as they are simple and show techniques that I have included in my samples. Also I have kept with my theme and not gone off track and added appropriate embelishment. For an improvement I would not use pockets on a striped dress as it is hard to see and looks to crowded.

This is my final design garment on a model drawing. I have also included samples that fit appropriatley with my outfit. For my samples I used techniques such as the bow, also I created a sample which I was going to include on my final garment. For my samples I used fabric paint as my mediums. My final garment design on my model, I used line and curve techniques and shading to create this. I like my final garment deisgn as it demonstrates 1930s-40s techniques and colours and patterns. For an improvement I would probably not modernise my chosen decade.

This is my final garment photoshoot images. I have also included more samples alongside of them. For my final garment I used a box pleat for the skirt. I also included a bow which i bonder webbed and then hand sewn on to the garment. I hand sewn and gathered the frilled sleeves and attached them myself by hand sewing them on. Then I added a simple sailors button for embelishment.

This is my moodboard of Vintage Fashion from 1930s and 1940s. I have used hand made bows with feathers, as feathers such as ostrich and peacock, were commonly used during this time. I have also included cameos and simple pearls, as these were the jewellry worn by the women of this times, as it was looked down upon if you wore expensive jewellry because you havent give as much as you possibly can to the war cause. My remaining images such as the sleek, backless hollywood glamour dresses were included, to show the less pratical side to women and the more glamourous side.
